Weird Times

We are still very recently into the latest Donald Trump administration, and already some reverberations are echoing throughout the distant US Virgin Islands, home to many a transplanted misfit.

Some came on sailboats and just never went home. Others came to tend bar and work in hospitality, stuffing their pockets with tip money. Some came to take advantage of the USVI tax benefit program called the Economic Development Commission – talk about stuffing your pockets. 90% tax break – income and capital gains taxes.

These days there seems to be a new kind of refugee. I’ve recently helped a Stateside couple skedaddle from their Carolinas home, seeking at least a degree of insularity from their president, whom they believe does not align with their safety concerns as people of color. I’m working with another couple who may jump ship, sell their St. Thomas oceanfront condo and head to Central America, in hopes of protecting their transgender son.

I have yet to assist anyone coming here courtesy of the benefits they view as unfolding under the Trump administration, but colleagues have. I’m not sure what the conversation would be were I to drive them around this eye-candy island in search of St. Thomas real estate. But hopefully, we would be civil. Perhaps share a laugh. (As my father used to intone – you’ve gotta laugh.)

I personally despair over what I see as a vacuum when it comes to speaking Truth to Power. What wise leader does not solicit and ponder opposing viewpoints? What wise leader appoints “yes” people – simply to secure support, not wisdom.

Time will tell.

Meanwhile, the Virgin Islands awaits you – whoever you are, whatever you believe.

Come here, be kind, respect our local community and…

enjoy the views.
